I know I am not the only one that has this problem with my flags: They "furl" themselves around the flagpole and I am constantly having to go out and "unfurl" my flags.
Here, below, is what my flag looked like when it was new. It is into it's second summer outside 24 hours a day. It has faded quite a bit since I purchased it. I suspect that these flags are probably printed with a large ink jet printer onto some cloth. You can probably only figure on getting one year of use on these flags.
I followed the advice of other people: Putting some slack in the flag so it was not held tight to the flagpole. That did not work completely. Another solution was to put some swivels on the the flagpole, as below, so that the flag cannot possibly wrap itself around the pole. Yes, that will work.
These do work to a certain extent but, if you have a lighter flag, it will still wrap around the pole eventually. What is needed is to have some more weight in the flag.
So here is what I did to solve the problem: I made a pocket in the side of the flag opposite of the grommets. You will need an old belt. Preferably a belt that has some good weight to it.
Measure the width of the belt and make the pocket a bit wider.
Make your belt "pocket" to be a bit wider than the belt so you can easily slide it into the pocket. you will make by folding the fabric back onto itself and then use your sewing machine to sew the side of the pocket and then sew the bottom of the pocket. You can leave the pocket open at the top.
