What Are USPS Smart Lockers?

USPS Smart Lockers are secure, self-service package lockers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When your package arrives, USPS places it in a locker and sends you a unique access code. You use that code to retrieve your package at your convenience—no waiting in line at the Post Office during business hours.

How Smart Lockers Work

Step 1: Your Package Is Delivered

When we ship your completed slide scanning project back to you (or when you receive any USPS package), the postal employee places it in a Smart Locker at the designated location.

Step 2: You Receive Access Codes

You'll receive an email with:

• A six-digit access code OR a QR code
• Instructions for retrieving your package
• The Smart Locker location address

Step 3: Pick Up Your Package

Go to the Smart Locker location anytime (24/7 access). Enter your six-digit code on the locker touchscreen or scan your QR code. The locker door opens automatically and you retrieve your package.

No waiting. No lines. No business hour restrictions.

Important Time Limits

5-Day Pickup Window

You have 5 calendar days to pick up your package from the Smart Locker. During those 5 days, you'll receive reminder emails (typically 2 reminders).

After 5 Days

If you don't retrieve your package within 5 days:

• Your access code expires
• The package is removed from the locker
• The package is taken to the Post Office retail window
• You must pick it up during business hours with valid ID

Special note for Priority Mail Express: These items are returned to sender after 5 calendar days total from the initial delivery attempt, regardless of when the Smart Locker option was selected.

Additional Hold Times at Post Office

Once moved to the retail window after the 5-day Smart Locker period:

• Priority Mail Express items: Returned to sender immediately
• Domestic packages: Held an additional 10 days
• International packages: Held an additional 25 days
• Package is NOT eligible for redelivery

Sharing Access with Others

You can authorize someone else to pick up your package on your behalf. Simply share the email containing the QR code and access instructions with someone you trust.

Important security reminder: You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your QR code. Only share it with people you trust. Think about your safety and privacy before sharing access codes.

Smart Lockers for Informed Delivery Subscribers

If you're an Informed Delivery subscriber, you'll see Smart Locker packages in your Daily Digest email when:

• The email address on the package matches your Informed Delivery account
• The package is within 3 days of delivery
• The package has been delivered to the locker

The Daily Digest will include a one-time use QR code that remains visible until you pick up the package or the 5-day window expires.

Didn't Receive Your Code?

Check your junk/spam email folder. The access code email sometimes gets filtered.

Code Not Working?

During normal business hours, a USPS employee at the Smart Locker location can assist you. Contact the Post Office location by phone during business hours.
