At the bottom of the Kodak Digitizing Box webpage, there's a small line of text:
"The Kodak trademark, logo and trade dress are used under license from Kodak."
What This Means: Kodak Digitizing Box is paying to use the Kodak name and branding logos. The "real" Kodak film company you might remember doesn't actually have anything to do with the scanning service—they're just collecting licensing fees for the use of their name and logos.
Kodak's Bankruptcy and Aftermath: Kodak filed for bankruptcy on January 19, 2012. They emerged from bankruptcy in 2013 and have since dabbled in cryptocurrency and pharmaceutical manufacturing. They've also been selling the rights to use their famous and trusted Kodak brand name.
Trading on Trust: Companies like Kodak Digitizing Box are trading on the trusted Kodak name that was built over decades of producing quality film. But the actual scanning service has nothing to do with the Kodak you remember. Some might say they're prostituting the name to harvest unsuspecting customers. You decide.
